Summer Reading Program at the Library

Summer means vacation time and more hours for reading. So, get ready to read and chances to win prizes for your efforts. June marks the beginning of the annual summer reading program at the Langley-Adams Library. And it is for everyone!  Adult readers should grab a bingo card on June 29 and start filling it out. Young readers may sign up at the Butterfly Kick-Off program on June 20. Sign-ups will continue over the summer, and the programs will end in August. The Town of Merrimac will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Day on: June 27,  8 am to 12 pm, 104 Church Street

The event is open to West Newbury residents!

Full carload (25 lbs or gallons) is $60

Half carload (10 lbs or gallons) is $40

Quarter carload (3 lbs or gallons) is $30

Cash or checks (payable to the Town of Merrimac) will be accepted.

Newburyport

Through Sat. June 27: National Juried Show at the Newburyport Art Asscociation.

The 2026 National Juried Show is on view throughout the Sargent, Hills and Hartson galleries. An opening reception and awards presentation by juror James Stroud, will be held Saturday, June 6th, from 4-6pm with light refreshments and beverages. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition coincides with the Summer Gift Shop, with all members’ original artwork in a variety of mediums, for sale under $200 and no larger than 12” x 18”. The Summer Gift Shop is through August 22nd.

New Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm. The gallery is handicap accessible. More information, as well as an online gallery is available at newburyportart.org.

Founded in 1948, Newburyport Art, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and to providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community. The gallery and events are free and open to the public.

Monday, June 29th at 7 PM: Common Soldier, Uncommon Hero (VIRTUAL). We’re thrilled to welcome historian Bruce E. Mowday to our virtual stage! He’ll be discussing the common soldier and the condition of American troops at Valley Forge through Joseph Plum Martin and his diary. Virtual registration required.

Thursday, July 2nd at 5:30 PM: Abigail Adams and the Daughters of Liberty (IN PERSON). Join us for a unique blend of first-person performance and multimedia presentation. The year is 1774. Abigail Adams invites a group of women to Plymouth for a “Spinning Bee” at the home of James and Mercy Warren. The audience is part of the meeting where Abigail introduces several of the Revolutionary Women, such as historian and author Mercy Otis Warren, poet Phillis Wheatly, and patriot Deborah Sampson. Registration required.

Tuesday, July 7th at 5:30 PM: Boston Tea Party History and Tasting (IN PERSON). Travel back to 1773 and experience history through taste! This engaging workshop brings the Boston Tea Party to life with a presentation and a tasting of select teas thrown into Boston Harbor. Registration required.

Rowley

June 27th: Community Greenfest

10 am to 2 pm on the Town Common The Community Green Fest is free to attend and features 25+ vendors that invite participants of all ages to shop green goods, learn about local sustainability efforts, participate in hands-on activities that encourage green living and environmental awareness, and connect with nature. At 11:00 am, the Center for Wildlife is sharing a few of their ambassador animals in a family-friendly presentation entitled “Birds of Prey: Our Talon-Ted Friends”. Throughout the day, attendees can visit a variety of educational exhibitors who will have hands-on activities for children and adults alike, including meeting native snakes, creating cyanotype art, crafting with Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team, exploring the impact of pollution on our watersheds with Mass Audubon and Parker River Clean Water Association, and more! Rowley residents will be treated to information on local produce, electric rebates, recycling options, and library services by chatting with representatives from local municipal departments and services. To compliment all the learning, attendees can than shop a number of sustainable vendors, including local honey, native plants, ecofriendly jewelry, nature-themed children’s books, sustainable craft supplies, upcycled kids toys, and more, all while grooving to live music and filling their bellies at the Fat Belly BBQ food truck. Thanks to generous funding from New England BioLabs, the Community Green Fest and its presentations are free to all!

Please join us on Thursday, June 25th at 11:30 am for the Lunch and Learn Speaker Series! Dr. Bobby Kelly will be speaking on substance use awareness, risks and resources—particularly as they relate to older adults and families. A triple-board certified physician in Family Medicine, Addiction Medicine and Preventive Medicine, Dr. Kelly is currently Medical Director of Addictions Treatment Services at Beth Israel Lahey Health. The session will feature a brief presentation followed by discussion, focusing on recognizing substance use concerns, understanding risks (including medication access in the home), and addressing common misconceptions.
