ROWLEY – To celebrate the start of the 2025 baseball season, the Rowley Senior Center, 39 Central St., is hosting a free Musical Baseball Show by local singer-songwriter (and former sportswriter) Howie Newman on Monday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m.
The show is open to all seniors in the greater Rowley area. Reservations are required; call 978-948-7637 to reserve a spot. Free refreshments will be served.
Newman, a former sportswriter for the Patriot Ledger, Lowell Sun, Boston Globe, Associated Press, and several other publications, covered the Red Sox for many years and has also remained an avid fan, having visited 101 major and minor league ballparks. He will sing baseball songs, offer up baseball trivia and talk about his days on the Bosox beat.
In addition, there will be a display of his personal baseball memorabilia and a free raffle for one of his baseball CDs.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Rowley Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
“Baseball is the one sport that really lends itself to music,” said Newman, whose experience also includes three years of radio color commentary for the Lowell Spinners, a former Red Sox farm team. “I’ll be playing my own baseball songs and some other tunes that everyone knows. We’ll talk baseball, do some trivia and just have fun.
“It’s going to be a unique, interactive type of show and I’m sure folks will enjoy it.”
