Georgetown FinCom Advances Budget Development Based on Anticipated Tax Override

Wednesday January 29, 2025

GEORGETOWN –  Despite last year’s rejection by voters of a requested $3 million tax override, the Georgetown Finance and Advisory Committee voted at their January 15, 2025 meeting to engage the selectmen with a recommendation to move forward with development of town budgets based on anticipation of a new override this spring.

“We’re in favor of asking the selectboard to work with us on an override,” Chair Ed Dobie stated. Member Fowler expressed concerns with an anticipated $4 million when it failed at $3 million last year. For their part, the members seek to educate the public on the needs of school department increases, requested police and fire increases, fixed costs, insurance increases, costs to support Whittier, as well as the loss of temporary revenue (COVID relief funds, money from drug retailers), which were used to fund positions, etc.  ♦
