ROWLEY — The Rowley Veterans Committee (RVC) is planning a major Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 29, with bag pipes and drums, the Old Nancy cannon and a flag raising at noon at the Town Common.
The committee may also have a surprise for all who attend.
Rowley veterans are encouraged to join the parade, and those who would like to march should meet at the Pine Grove Elementary School at 10:30 a.m. The parade will leave from Pine Grove at 11 a.m. and head south on state Route 1A to the Town Common.
Every veteran who attends the parade will receive a memorial challenge coin.
Rowley resident Nick George, a Purple Heart-decorated Marine veteran of World War II and the Korean War, will serve as the parade’s grand marshal.
Pine Grove students will speak about the six war memorials on the Town Common and the front lawn of Town Hall.
Triton Regional High School student Douglas Aylward will discuss the turbulent history of Old Nancy and the rivalry between Rowley and Georgetown over the old cannon.
The Rowley Council on Aging will provide complimentary food and refreshments.
Pine Grove principal Nichole LaPerriere has also invited all Rowley veterans to attend the school’s Memorial Day assembly at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 26. She asked that veterans please arrive early.
