GEORGETOWN, Mass. — The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Commission thanks Bryan Benoit of Boy Scout Troop 50 for completing his Eagle Scout project at American Legion Park and for giving the Commission the opportunity to sponsor the work.
Benoit, a Georgetown High School student and Life Scout working toward the rank of Eagle, planned and led two public improvements at the park. In June, he and fellow Scouts assembled and installed new floating docks on Pentucket Pond. On Saturday, September 19, they replaced the deteriorated roof on the picnic pavilion next to the playground. Benoit raised the funds for roofing materials so the project would not be charged to the town budget. Any remaining balance will be turned over to Parks and Recreation.
The Commission provided site support, including coordination with the Highway Department for debris removal, and served as the project’s municipal sponsor and beneficiary.
“Bryan showed real leadership from the first meeting through the last shingle,” said Mike Donahue, chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission. “He fundraised, organized volunteers, worked around the weather, and left the park better than he found it. On behalf of every member of the Commission, we are grateful he chose American Legion Park and allowed us to stand behind this project.”
Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Scouts BSA. To earn it, a Scout must design a service project that meets a community need, secure the resources to complete it, and lead others in carrying it out. Scouting builds leadership, planning skills, and citizenship by putting young people to work on parks, trails, schools, and other public places. Projects like Benoit’s are how those lessons become lasting improvements for the whole town. The Commission also thanks Benoit’s family, Troop 50, the Highway Department, and the residents and businesses who donated time or materials.
The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Commission oversees town parks and recreation facilities, including American Legion Park on Pentucket Pond.
