Last week, The Town Common in a story about Rowley’s new fire chief wrote: The Rowley department has one female firefighter, Lt. Merissa Titus-Abate, and (the new chief) is looking for more. His partner in Topsfield was a woman, whom he described as emotionally and mentally strong and has a lot of empathy.
Chief Daniel Veinot felt the article left the wrong impression “that the fire service is only about having the brawn.” He wrote that fire professionals also need to be “mentally resilient and emotionally aware.”
While a firefighter in Topsfield, his partner was a woman who was physically capable and also possessed the mental resilience and emotional depth we need, he said.
“Rowley Fire is not currently hiring, as there are no open positions.
However, we would pursue the best candidate or candidates to fill any future
position,” he wrote. ♦
