Dorothy C. Galanis, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 in Newburyport, Massachusetts on September 12, 2025. Born on February 26, 1946, in Newton, Massachusetts, Dorothy’s life was a testament to her thoughtful, loving, and selfless nature.
Dorothy was a proud graduate of Catherine Gibbs School She embarked on a career in stenography, where her precision and attention to detail shone. It was in the early days while employed that she ventured on a cruise ship across the Atlantic to Europe where she met the love of her life, Athan Galanis. Their meeting was what fairy tales are made of and the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Upon marriage, Dorothy embraced the Greek culture in every aspect of her life. She converted to Greek Orthodox, learned the Greek language fluently, and cooked all Greek foods.
In 1975, Dorothy played a pivotal role in establishing the family business, Paralia Corporation, alongside her husband. She balanced her professional responsibilities with the demands of raising three children in a nurturing, loving and supportive environment.
Dorothy’s faith was a guiding principle in her life, fostering a home filled with compassion and kindness. She carried this spirit into all her endeavors, especially in the care she took to make her home a place of warmth and beauty. Her creative flair was most evident in the exquisite Christmas ornaments she hand crafted and the elaborate gingerbread houses she made from scratch. These became cherished family treasures and symbols.
A master of needlepoint and crochet, Dorothy’s sewing patterns were not only a hobby but also a means to provide her children in the early years of their lives with unique and lovingly made clothing. Her culinary prowess was equally impressive; Dorothy was renowned for her sumptuous cakes and cookies, which she baked with joy for holidays and family gatherings.
She possessed a rhythm in her soul. She often found enjoyment dancing and listening to music, instilling a sense of merriment in those around her. Dorothy was also an avid animal lover, and accepted all kinds of animals as pets.
She is survived by her brother, Richard Palmaccio, and her adoring children, Evan Galanis, Melaina and her husband John Eggleston, Dianna and her husband David Scanlon. Her six grandchildren, Sierra, Athan, Alexandra, Olivia, Marina, and Seve, who will fondly remember their grandmother’s love and gentle guidance.
Dorothy joins her beloved husband Athan in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love and selflessness that will continue to flourish in the hearts of her family.
Dorothy C. Galanis lived a life enveloped in the love of her family, marked by her unwavering commitment to them. Her memory will be held in the highest regard, as a woman who filled their lives with beauty, creativity, and an abundance of unconditional love.
Relatives & Friends were received Friday, September 19, 2025 at F. S. Roberts & Son Funeral Home, 14 Independent Street, Rowley. A Funeral Service was held Saturday, September 20, 2025 at F. S. Roberts & Son Funeral Home. Burial followed at Rowley Burial Ground in Rowley, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be pledged to Alzheimer’s Association.
