Architectural History Tours of the North Shore This Fall

Wednesday September 11, 2024

HisTOURy is excited to continue hosting guided tours of historic buildings around Essex County this fall! HisTOURy is a nonprofit whose mission is to promote the appreciation and preservation of historic buildings in communities throughout New England and New York.

On their tours, participants will get the opportunity not only to learn about the architectural heritage of Essex County, hear about its development and the lives of its former residents, but also get the unique chance to tour several historic home interiors.

The organization debuted its Essex County tours last fall and spring, touring late-Victorian homes in Marblehead and Swampscott and Colonial-era homes in Newburyport. They will be highlighting 19th-century architecture in Wenham and Topsfield on Sunday, September 29th, and returning to highlight a new set of Colonial-era homes in Newburyport on Sunday, October 6th.

Many know Newburyport’s High Street for its great concentration of 2 ½ story, grand Federal-style homes, which were built for its wealthy sea merchants. One of the interior home tours on October 6th will be one of these High Street residences. Captain John Bogardus, a Russian immigrant, purchased the circa 1805 home half a century later. He was notorious in the community for his Confederate sympathies, not an expected story!

And as folks get excited for another great year of the Topsfield Fair, join HisTOURy a few days before in Wenham and Topsfield for the special opportunity to tour the circa 1815 Daniel Towne House. Farming on the property began around 1750 by Daniel Towne Sr. and continued into the 20th century by his grandson, Frank Towne, who was an early member of the Essex Agricultural Society, the nonprofit that continues to operate the Topsfield Fair…

These are just some of the highlights of these one-time-only events. Space is limited. Register at www.histoury.org or email info@histoury.org for more information.
