NEWBURYPORT – When winter seems unbearable, don’t just suffer through the long, cold nights. Have some fun.
Patti St. John, the director of Newburyport Adult and Community Education (NACE), has a few good ideas.
Get to know your ancestors, learn to sing outside the shower, try out your favorite jokes, talk with an astronaut at the International Space Station, explore the world of puppets, express your frustrations and worries about climate change and wars by writing a poem about you feel.
Or spend four delightful 90-minute sessions with program founder Vicki Hendrickson in her home on Low Street, discussing Mark Twain and his irrepressible character Huck Finn.
Online registration for NACE is open for winter classes. Bring a friend, or for those hard to please relatives, give them a holiday gift certificate. Buy one and get one free.
Classes run from one night to eight weeks during the winter session, starting January 22 and ending March 20.
There are more than 50 classes available that include Stand-up Comedy, Singing, Culinary Arts, The Artist’s Way, Vintage Radio Repair, French and Italian Language, Conversations with an Astronaut, Whales, College Planning, Japanese Bookbinding, Writing Your Artist Statement, Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels and Spiritual Journeys.
College-bound juniors and seniors are also offered SAT prep classes, along with English courses for those who are not native English speakers.
Anyone aged 15 and above can join the classes offered in the greater Newburyport region. The classes have limited spots, so hurry. Classes tend to fill up fast.

NACE is a fully self-supporting program. Its budget is funded primarily from course fees. Additional funding is made available from grants and individual donors.
It operates as part of the Newburyport Public Schools, but receives no tax dollars.
Sponsors include Newburyport Bank, Institution for Savings, N.A.I.D. Foundation, Moseley Foundation, BankProv and NH Community Foundation.
