Newbury Library Upcoming Adult Programs This Week

Wednesday April 08, 2026

Join local author, Julie Masis, for a reading and discussion of her new book, How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine on Wednesday April 8th at 6pm.

This very personal and accessible collection of rich stories is about her relationship with her Moldovan-born Grandpa Shlomo and their tender conversations about his daily life in the Obodovka ghetto under Romanian occupation and Nazi rule. Fighting to stay alive while watching many around him die of starvation and unlivable conditions, Shlomo’s stories are tales of survival by way of luck, tenacity and wit combined with the courage and generosity of others. Julie will read passages from her book, share photos and take questions about Grandpa Shlomo, his extraordinary life, and her own journey to understand the people and places in her own family history.

On Thursday April 9th at 6pm, local birder David Williams returns for a presentation on Birding By Ear.  Bird song is the background “noise” of nature. This presentation will help one better appreciate this “noise” of our local birds. Did you know that all birds have songs and calls and that each serves a special purpose? During this presentation you will learn strategies and tips to help learn to appreciate and identify local birds by ear.

Please register for these free events at newburylibrary.org/events or by calling the library at (978)465-0539.
