Transforming Care: Groveland’s New Series Offers a Fresh Approach to Dementia and Aging

Wednesday January 22, 2025

GROVELAND – Dementia affects millions of lives, yet for many, the journey begins with uncertainty and unanswered questions. A new educational series, Getting to Know Dementia, hosted by the Groveland Council on Aging in partnership with Monarch Care Partners, aims to shed light on this complex condition while offering tools for empowerment and connection.

Launching in January, the four-part series is designed for caregivers, families, and individuals curious about their own cognitive health as they age. It goes beyond understanding dementia, equipping participants with practical skills to navigate challenges and foster meaningful relationships.

“This series isn’t just for caregivers,” said Alyssa Lee, Director of the Groveland Council on Aging. “It’s also for anyone who wants to learn more about how the brain changes with age and how to better connect with loved ones—or even prepare for their own aging journey. It’s about building a foundation of knowledge and compassion.”

The sessions are built around the Positive Approaches to Care curriculum, a framework that emphasizes understanding the changes in the brain and body to foster effective communication and care. Each session stands alone but builds on the previous one, creating a comprehensive roadmap for those navigating dementia or interested in proactive education about cognitive health.

The Journey at a Glance:

  • Class One: Normal vs. Not Normal Cognitive Change – Tuesday, January 28, 12:00 PM
  • Class Two: What is Dementia? – Tuesday, Feb. 25, 12:00 PM
  • Class Three: Now What?!: Positive Approaches for Someone Living with Dementia – Tuesday, March 25, 12:00 PM
  • Class Four: Caregiver vs. Care Partner: Making Meaningful Change – Tuesday, April 22, 12:00 PM

“Understanding what’s normal and what’s not as we age is empowering,” Lee explained. “It gives people a starting point, whether they’re concerned about a loved one, a neighbor, or even themselves. And it offers a chance to build confidence for the road ahead.”

The final session focuses on shifting from the traditional “caregiver” role to becoming a “care partner,” a perspective that emphasizes collaboration and connection. “It’s a transformative way to approach caregiving,” Lee added. “This series provides the tools and mindset to make that change.”
