Newburyport PEG Center for Art & Activism The ANTI-RACISM SERIES Is Done, But Our Work Has Just Begun!

Tuesday July 16, 2024

Dear Community,
We’d like to thank everyone who supported and attended the Anti-Racism Series sponsored by the PEG Center for Art & Activism, The YWCA of Greater Newburyport, and Eddie Carson. It was a great start to a vital reimaging of what a more inclusive Newburyport can be. We are not done with this issue – in fact, we are just beginning!
The last event, “Where Do We Go From Here,” held at the Bresnahan school included a breakout session where everyone had a chance to brainstorm ideas on diversity, equity and inclusion. The discussion centered on 3 basic areas: Civic/Business; Schools/Education; and Activism.
We’ve culled a few suggestions that we can work to implement:
• Display signs that businesses demonstrate/showcase inclusive language – Do not accept racist attitudes.
• Work with the Chamber of Commerce to encourage more BIPOC-owned businesses.
• Engage with the Superintendent of Schools to develop an appropriate curriculum.
• Help train teachers on DEI and hire more teachers/aides of color.
• Host bystander training programs to public to promote DEI.
• Create a 5-year plan & make commitments by year.
• Make a full-time DEI position at City Hall to coordinate and drive ongoing efforts.
We welcome your thoughts and feedback as we move forward. We hope the public will join us for actions, gatherings, and meetings throughout the year.
