REGIONAL – Looking for a unique present for the holidays. How about sending an original, custom-designed poem?
If you are no William Shakespeare, and most of us aren’t, the skilled poets at Newburyport High School’s Creative Writing at Night class can write a poem for you. For a minimum donation of $15 or $20, an NHS student will craft a poem to your taste and specifications.
The money raised benefits the Pettengill House, a nonprofit community social service agency that provides case management, basic needs support, emergency assistance and crisis intervention. It serves nine North Shore communities – Amesbury, Byfield, Groveland, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury and West Newbury.
The poem can be a special holiday greeting, let college students know how much you miss them, thank someone, make someone laugh or cry or any special reason.
“You choose the person, the sentiment and any three specific words or phrases. The Creative Writing class will do the rest,” the announcement said.
Choose the type of poem from free verse, English or Italian sonnet (Elizabethan or Petrarchan), villanelle (a French form), haiku (a Japanese form) or ovillejo (a Spanish form). Whatever type you choose, your poem will be written in English.
The poem may be ordered on a form found on the community page of the Newburyport district’s website, in the main office at the high school, placed with a Creative Writing at Night student or by request to dszabo@newburyport.k12.ma.us.
All poem orders must be placed by December 14. The poems will be sent out by December 22.
