Tuesday, September 13 at 7:00 pm: Bacchanalia, Murder, and Newburyport: The Great Watt (IN PERSON). What is “Watt’s Cellar”? Why? Who was “Watt”? What’s a “cellar”? And, most importantly, where is it? Come to hear a story predating colonization by the Newbury first settlers, where native peoples play a large role. It’s a downtown Newburyport history mystery, with sex, drunkenness, political power struggles, and little-known aspects of our colonial history that no one wants to talk about.
Monday, September 19 at 7:00 pm: The Family Roe: An American Story, with Joshua Prager (VIRTUAL). Join Investigative Journalist Joshua Prager for a talk on his deeply researched book, The Family Roe: An American Story. The Family Roe, which was named a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize, offers extraordinary insight into the Supreme Court’s most divisive case and its plaintiff, Norma McCorvey. This program is a collaboration with the Newton Free Library.
Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 pm: Wingmasters: North American Birds of Prey (IN PERSON). This presentation incorporates five live birds of prey, all native to New England. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds’ place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that Wingmasters cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. Space is limited.
Thursdays September 22, September 29, October 6, and October 13 at 7:00 pm: Knitting for Beginners (IN PERSON). Come pick up a new skill or brush up on your knitting during this four-week crafting series with knitter and former NPL librarian Abby. Learn the basics of knitting including casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off, and take home a handy dishcloth when you’re done! This program is free: materials will be provided. Registration opens September 1st and is for all four classes. Class is limited to 15 participants, so if you register and cannot come, please cancel with the reference desk or online.

We will review the life and works of a different artist each month, and discuss the movements that they contributed to. This month we will be reviewing the works of Swiss artist Cuno Amiet (1868 – 1961). No prior knowledge of art history or the artist is necessary. No registration necessary.
