GEORGETOWN — The Georgetown Fire Department is seeking students in Georgetown to participate in a remembrance ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The event will be held outside of the Georgetown Public Safety Building at 47 Central St. on Sunday, Sept. 11, beginning at 8 a.m.

Duties of students may include writing a short essay reflecting on the meaning of 9/11 to be read aloud by the student or a firefighter; assisting in raising/lowering the flag; placing the memorial wreath; ringing the bell; and reading passages, poems or the firefighter’s prayer.

Students who wish to get involved should send an email listing duties they are interested in to Acting Chief Chuck Savage at csavage@georgetownma.gov.

“There is an entire generation that has been born and come of age since the attacks. We must include them in our ceremonies so that history will be passed down and our future societies will ‘never forget,'” Acting Chief Savage said. “We look forward to coming together as a community to honor and remember the lives lost and the lives sacrificed on that day, and we hope that students in our town will be a big part of the remembrance ceremony.”
