YWCA Greater Newburyport Hosts 34nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration & Day of Service
The YWCA Greater Newburyport is excited to host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration & Day of Service on Monday, January 19, 2026, 9:30 am at Newburyport City Hall (60 Pleasant Street, Newburyport, MA).
The theme of this year’s Commemoration is “Standing Strong: Our Beloved Community” in recognition of Dr. King’s vision of a society where justice, equality, and prosperity thrive.
The YWCA is also thrilled to welcome our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Angel Jones. Dr. Jones is a first-generation Afro-Latina educator, scholar, activist and author whose research explores racial battle fatigue and the impact of racism on mental health. Her book “Street Scholar” (Peter Lang) is “an unapologetic call-to-action that challenges the Academy to thoughtfully and intentionally engage in public scholarship.”
The event will also include the presentation of the Nancy E. Peace ‘Action Against Prejudice’ Award, the return of local poet Rhina P. Espaillat, and a performance by vocalist Christian Cornelio. Rabbi Alex Matthews and Reverand Rebecca Bryan will deliver the Blessing and Benediction. Following the Commemoration, attendees have the opportunity to participate in a sponsored service activity in conjunction with some of our community partners.Tickets are $10 for students/teachers and $20 for adults.
