Upcoming Newburyport Public Library Happenings in January

Tuesday January 13, 2026

Wednesday, January 21st at 7pm: How Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II (VIRTUAL). Author Elyse Graham will discuss her new book, “Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II”, the true untold story of the academics who became OSS spies, invented modern spycraft, and helped turn the tide of the war to defeat the Nazis. Virtual registration required.

Saturday, January 24th at 2pm: An “Afternoon of Gratitude” for FOL Members & Book Sale Volunteers. All 2026 FOL Members and past Book Sale Volunteers are invited to register for this event. Enjoy refreshments, door prize drawings every 30 minutes, and a small gift of thanks for your support. Registration required.

Monday, January 26th at 6pm: Maker Monday – Moon & Stars Wreaths (IN PERSON). Join us in making your own Moon and Stars Wreath this month. All materials will be provided by the library. Registration required.

Monday, January 26th at 7pm: Creating a Modern Homestead (VIRTUAL). Join modern day homesteader, blogger, and author Victoria Pruett as she shares her experience with various aspects of homesteading, including cooking from scratch, food preservation, backyard chickens, and more. Virtual registration required.

Ongoing Discussion Groups:

Thursday, January 15th at 3pm: Classics Book Group (IN PERSON). Join NPL’s Classics Book Group! This group meets in-person on the third Thursday of every month in the Director’s Room. This month’s title is “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Registration required.

Tuesday, January 27th at 5pm: Just the Facts: Nonfiction Book Group (VIRTUAL). Join us for NPL’s Just the Facts Book Group! This group selects and discusses nonfiction books. This month we will be discussing “The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, From the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement” by Sharon McMahon. Virtual registration required.

Other ongoing programs:

Once a month: Home Delivery Services! Are you unable to come to the library? Let the library come to you! Any Newburyport who is possession of a library card and meets one of the following conditions is eligible for this program: (1) A disability and/or health issue which prevents an individual from visiting the Library, (2) Mobility issues which prevent an individual from visiting the Library, (3) Temporary physical limitations (or illness) which prevent an individual from visiting the Library for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months. 2nd Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm: NPL Arts & Crafts Social (IN PERSON). All skill levels are welcome. Please bring in your own supplies and projects to work on. The Library will also provide coloring pages, color pencils, and origami. Suggested art hive projects include knitting and crocheting, collaging, small-scale watercolors and/or drawings.

Thursdays (bi-weekly) at 5:15pm: Spanish Conversation Group (IN PERSON). All levels are welcome! However, it may be best suited for those who have a basic knowledge of Spanish or above. Please note, this is not a class, but it can be a great way to practice your Spanish conversational skills and connect with others who have an interest in the language. The group is led by a Spanish-speaking librarian. Registration required.

Mondays & Thursdays from 2:30pm to 3:30pm: Drop-In Tech Time (IN PERSON). Bring your simple technology questions for a drop-in session. We can help with the basics for your phones, laptops, tablets, and e-readers, including accessing library resources, adding Libby to a personal device, basic computer navigation, and general internet instruction. Sessions can last up to 30 minutes and will be run with available staff on a first come, first served basis. Contact info@newburyportpl.org or call us at 978-465-4428 x 2 with questions.

Fridays at 2pm: Movie Matinee (IN PERSON). Titles are posted on the Library website’s events calendar.

Drop-In Social Services Support (IN PERSON). The City’s licensed professional social worker Trish Boateng offers regular drop-in hours at the Library for any Newburyport resident who may need assistance. Get connected with assistance for food, housing, transportation, health, childcare, or other necessities. Meetings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis every Tuesday afternoon at the library, 1:30-2:30pm.
