Penelope ‘Penny’ J. Verow

Tuesday November 04, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Penelope ‘Penny’ J. Verow on October 18, 2025, in Newburyport, MA, at age 78.

Born in Walthamstow, England, on September 12, 1947, Penny came to the United States at nine years old and lived in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, until she moved to Bangor, Maine, as an adult. There she met and married the love of her life, Ronald, where they raised their children and built their life together.

Penny adored animals, especially her beloved dogs and cats, loved Disney World, playing bingo, and beating everyone else at Final Jeopardy. Many of Regina and Robin’s friends will remember her as the chauffeur driving a car full of teenagers home after school activities.

She loved to laugh and was incredibly funny. Her memory lives on with MFOs (Mandatory Family Outings), all her favorite shows that she watched over and over again despite knowing the scripts word-for-word, her favorite foods of cannoli, eclairs, and Five Guys’ fries, and of course, her way of greeting people, “Hi-Two’s.” Her unfailing kindness changed many people’s lives.

Although Multiple Sclerosis and breast cancer stole her body, they never stole her joy. Most importantly, “We promise we won’t forget you!”

Penny is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ronald Verow; and her daughters and grandchildren: Regina Verow (KP McLaughlin), Braidon and Teaghan; Robin Verow-Jolliffe (Scott Merrill); Sarah and CJ (and their father, Brian Jolliffe); and her sisters Julia Dutton, Carol Taylor, and Sharon Saunders. She will also be missed by her closest friends, Pam and John Mugani. She was predeceased by her father, Reginald Dutton, her mother, Francis (Dilworth) Dutton, and her sister, Jean Powell.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at
AdviniaCare Newburyport and to Christel and Kristen of Riverside Care Advisors, who worked so hard to care for Mom over the past 2.5 years.

A celebration of life will take place in Bangor at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please pledge donations in her honor to the Bangor Humane Society or an animal charity of your choice.
