To the Editor:
Here are my 7 wishes for the next Mayor of Newburyport:
- Properly paved streets, smooth enough to keep us from feeling in the seat of our pants when our vehicles have crossed a town border.
- Lifeguards returned to the Plum Island beachfront, so that all of our little children can happily splash about in safety.
- More responsible use of taxpayer funds to benefit the community, without regard to their impact on elections.
- Better maintenance of the Newburyport waterfront boardwalk, to enhance its safety and beauty.
- Better treatment of volunteers, especially the polite and courteous young ladies who keep our library operating smoothly and responsibly.
- Do not attempt to curry favor with voting groups with pricey pet projects the City can ill afford.
- Properly employ the rules of etiquette everywhere from City Hall hearings to public displays and communications with the taxpayers.
Let all remember that a public service is a public trust, requiring placing honesty and integrity above private gain, avoiding conflicts of interest, and not using public office for private advantage.
My vote for the next Mayor of Newburyport will go to the candidate who I believe will best adhere to these principles.
LCDR Warren P. Russo,
USN (Ret.)
Newburyport
