NEWBURYPORT – Get a free sneak peek at this year’s Newburyport Documentary Film Festival on its Preview Night, Thursday Sept. 4, at the Firehouse Center for the Arts. Those attending can vote for their favorite trailer using their phones.
The 21st Newburyport Documentary Film Festival is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 26 to Sunday, Sept. 28 and is being held at the Firehouse and The Screening Room in downtown Newburyport
Festival passes will be on sale at the preview event. Attendees can pick their films and reserve seats before they sell out.
Admission to the preview is free, with a suggested $10 donation. All proceeds go to support the all-volunteer nonprofit that runs the festival.
A reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by trailers for this year’s films at 7 p.m. Light snacks will be provided, and a cash bar will be open.
The festival began in 2004, founded by Michelle Fino, and has shown more than 300 films since its start. It has gone through several name changes before officially becoming the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival.
Today, the festival is known for bringing filmmakers and audiences together in what has been called the “Filmmakers’ Festival.”
Over the years, the festival has added awards, including the David Kleiler Award, created in memory of one of its early supporters. It also highlights young talent through the YES Award, which features the work of student filmmakers.
Even during the pandemic in 2020, the festival continued by moving online. It now takes place every September in Newburyport, along with smaller events held throughout the year.
