IPSWICH: Veterans Walkway Coming Soon

Tuesday May 06, 2025

IPSWICH – Veterans organizations in town are preparing to honor those who served in the armed forces by creating a commemorative brick walkway leading from the curb to the Veterans Memorial on South Main Street.

An estimated 141 Ipswich residents gave their lives in service during the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The project calls for paving the old walkway with 4-by-8-inch bricks and 12-by-12-inch pavers. The bricks will be etched with a veteran’s name and finished with a special black enamel paint for added visibility.

Each engraved brick, featuring three lines of up to 16 characters, will become a permanent part of the Ipswich Veterans Memorial Walkway.

A dedication ceremony is expected to be announced by July 1 with plans tentatively set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 27. Work on the walkway is scheduled to begin in early June with excavation and the delivery of the etched bricks and pavers anticipated in July.

Volunteers will handle much of the work, with installation of the bricks and pavers set to begin in July.

Once the walkway is in place, the team plans to hydroseed the surrounding area to allow the grass time to recover ahead of the dedication ceremony.
